Polypropylene

Polypropylene has remarkable audio properties. A Capacitor by nature is a 'break' in the circuit. It is important to get the audio signal across this 'break' with the least amount of degradation. This degradation is known as the loss angle or dissipation factor. Polypropylene has a dissipation loss angle factor of 0.001δ which compares extremely favourably with other dielectrics. Whilst this is the normal dissipation factor, by careful manufacturing and choice of materials Ansar has achieved dissipation factors to 0.0001δ. Another property of polypropylene is that it is very thermally stable between -25C to +55C.

Audio Signals

Audio signals pass across capacitor via plates, which have layers of aluminium vacuum deposited on them and are extremely thin (fractions of a micron). This thinness causes unwanted resistance to the signal. Ansar uses material that has undergone double vacuum deposition, thereby halving the resistance.

Element Winding

The main part of the capacitor is a tight coil of dielectric and metallised plates. This process is automated, but the machines are attended at all times to ensure consistency. Every batch of product is manufactured to exactly the same standards, ensuring that once a capacitor design has been approved, that future batches will have exactly the same characteristics. Ansar also ensure that samples are wound on the same machines as production items and not on a different lab machine. High tensions are used during the winding process. A pressure roller is used to press up against the element as it is being formed. This is done to remove air inclusions from the winding. (Air pockets would degrade the signal causing unwanted vibrations).

Voltage Proofing

All Ansar capacitors undergo a 15-minute proof test to voltages 50% higher than their normal working voltage. The test is carried out to ensure that the capacitors are capable of comfortably withstanding spikes.

High Temperature Treatment

Just after the capacitor elements are wound, they are subjected to several hours of high temperature treatment, just below the melting point of the dielectric, effectively making the dielectric slightly plasticised and pliable. This allows the capacitor to contract, and the layers to actually bond to each other. The layers are further compressed to exclude air pockets. The finished product is then highly stable with respects to its value. Without heat treatment the capacitor is liable to a wider variance of value with temperature.
